Movimentos 2018 - Dignity

Movimentos Festival 2018

Important themes, ideas, and virtues are the leitmotifs that have shaped the Movimentos Festival. Together with artists from all over the world, the conversation focusing on these festival-specific topics on the stages in the Autostadt and in the local area offers you a chance to share ideas. At the same time, it brings us closer to answers, but does not endeavour to be an absolute answer.

This concept has characterized our festival since 2006. "Home" was the first theme, followed by others including Respect, Humility, Happiness, Love, and last year, Freedom. Choosing a theme to follow this ideal was not easy. It wouldn't have to be something even more valuable than freedom. But why not choose a category that is firmly established as the foundation of our coexistence in the first article of Germany's Fundamental Law? The one that says, "Human dignity is inviolable"?

Dignity is more than a virtue. It does not have to be learned or acquired. It originates with humankind and remains as a lifelong characteristic. Although dignity and its inviolability is understood as the supreme principle of our coexistence, it is put to the test every day. The infringement of dignity is present in authoritarian states and crisis regions, as well as in established societies and in our everyday lives. In some places, it is believed that a future of dishonour stands before us, yet at the same time we see extensive social cooperation, empathy, and a willingness to help.

For us, this is reason enough to take a closer look at dignity and, in an artistic discussion with you, our audience, give it its due weight in the Movimentos Festival 2018. From the Book of Revelation, to the classic celebration of human dignity in Schiller's ballads, the spoken word programme focuses on the festival theme. In his recent autobiography, Wayne McGregor decodes dignity in a choreographic experiment as the DNA of human existence. With the disintegration of words and language, Lin Hwai-min and his Cloud Gate Dance Theatre formulate the loss of a worthy being. Ina Christel Johannessen calls to uphold the dignity of creation. In the Movimentos Academy, teenagers and young adults access the subject in a programme of dance. Gregory Porter's music tells real-life stories with a sense of humour charm. William Youn uses his own personal approach to show us the modernity of Mozart and Schubert. A public panel discussion addresses the question of the value of human dignity and its present-day challenges. After all, respecting and protecting dignity is not only the responsibility of a state authority, it is a duty shared by everyone.
